Installation Matrix MOCO

Mega ST users: disable CONTROL.ACC. The systemdisk contains a new accessory
named CTRL.ACC.

De-activate all accessories.

Rename your current AUTO folder to AUTO.OLD. The installation creates a new
AUTO folder.

In case your system contains a folder MATRIX, rename this to MATRIX.OLD.

Copy all the files/folders to your bootpartition. In case an alert shows up
that GEMSYS already exists, you can ignore this, since only new GDOS drivers
will be added. Just select "copy" in this case.

In the case you already operated with any GDOS system, there should be
already the file ASSIGN.SYS. Check the path entry in this file to be correct.

In the MATRIX folder you'll find another folder CXX. This one contains all
the separate settings for resolution, palette, mode, etc. The active one
gets extension CXS, the not active ones are .CXX files. These are plain
ASCII files, and they can be editted in any texteditor. Structure is:
- 64x38x8.CXX  for 640x384 res in 256 colors
- 64x40x1.CXX  for 640x400 res monochrome
- 64x48x4.CXX  for 640x480 res 16 colors
- 20x96x8v.CXX for 2048x960 res VIRTUAL in 256 colors.

Now reboot your system, and keep the SHIFT key depressed.

You'll see "Installieren: [Ja]/Nein/VDI/DUAL/Auswahl/GDOS?
Press the N key (for Nein)

You'll get the desktop on the old monitor (as previous).

Start the program CXXSETUP.PRG. Click the "auswahl" icon. Select a CXX file
that matches your monitor and doubleclick on it. This file will be moved to
\MATRIX\CXX\ and renamed to .CXS (Note the original .CXX file will be MOVED
to another directory and renamed, thus the original file is no longer
present in the directory where you found it! This means that after somany
tries with different settings, you'll loose all the possibilities to select
from. Keep a copy of the original files!)

Next click the "reset" icon and the system starts on your Matgraph screen.


The regular systemstart proceeds as follows:

At boot time the first program to be run is CXX_INST.PRG in the AUTO folder.
This one looks for a .CXS file in \MATRIX\CXX\ and thus initializes the card.
Next a driver reference will be written to ASSIGN.SYS.
The driver will be set in RAM and the system will be redirected to this
driver. Next there will be an option to install GDOS or not in case you
press a SHIFT key at boottime. The different options are:
- J proceed without changes (also with RETURN key)
- N do not install GDOS
- V start in GEM mode (CXX-VDI)
- D start in dual mode (you need two monitors hooked up)
- A alternate selection (to select a different CXX file)
- G don't start GDOS (only in monochrome and dual modes)

In case you don't press a SHIFT key at boottime, the card will be
initialized and set to the regular res/color settings as specified per the
current .CXS file.


The program CXXSETUP.PRG is used to change palette, resolution etc. while
operating the card. It can be run as an accessory by renaming it to .ACC.

Short explanation of the icons found at the bottom:

Disk: selector for a CXX file
Merker: memory for parameters
Edit: the actual parameters
CXX: the actually set parameters for the card
Auswahl: the presently selected CXX file
Reset: resets the system  (does not work in the ACC version!)

If you want to change the settings and at the same time check the actual
screen, select the CXX icon first. Once you have the settings to your
liking, drag the "edit" icon to the "disk" icon to save them into a
permanent file. You can also store the "edit" settings to a temporary buffer
by dragging "edit" onto "merker". Note this also works the other way around.
At all times, the resolution settings should be multiples of 16... thus a
resolution setting of 800x600 is impossible! You can choose between 800x592
or 800x608. Sometimes you change a setting and try to save it to a CXX file
and the program just tells you "parameter ungleich VDI". When afterwards you
manually change the CXX file and load it as the default one, the system will
start without problems.

The sliders are as follows:
MX, MY are the horizontal and vertical resolution sliders
VX, VY are the same for a virtual screen
Hf, Vf are the timeframe settings
Hp, Vp are the start positions of the screen

Note that Hf and Vf set limits to the MX and VX values, if you want to
increase MX it may be necessary to change Hf first...

Ich habe nun alles soweit installiert, Treiber wird geladen. Ich habe mit insgesamt 10 verschiedenen SetUps (CXX/CXS) getestet und auch aufgrund der nun vorliegenden Infos manuell ein Setup-File erstellt.

Problem: Kein Bild. Auf meinem TFT-Display wird nur oben und unten ein ca. 1 cm grauer Streifen ("Atari Monochrom Grau") gezeigt und der Monitor moniert eine zu geringe Frequenz - vertikal erhalte ich je nach SetUp etwas zwischen 23 bis max. 29 Hz, horizontal max. 64 KHz.

Habe 640er, 800er, 1024er und 1280er Auflösung mit verschiedenen Werten durchgespielt, auch mal die Einstellungen für MOCO/125 und MOCO/160 getestet (diese beiden Modelle erlauben eine höhere Videobandbreite, die normale MOCO macht nur 110 KHz).

Gibt es hier noch einen Kniff? Oder ist die Karte defekt?

Die von meinem TFT angezeigten Frequenzen stimmen, ich habe mal direkt an der Karte ein Scope rangehalten. Ich habe zwar nur ein einfaches 20 MHz analog-Scope, aber es passt von der Auflösung/Skala einwandfrei.

Am TFT laufen über den normalen TT-Port alle TT-Auflösungen problemlos (und an PC sowieso, TFT hat 2 Eingänge).

Any ideas?

PS: Die Firma Matrix existiert ja noch... hat jemand da noch Kontakt zu einem der alten Atari-Freaks? Oder gibt´s dort keine Atarianer mehr?

... ist die Buchse vielleicht kompatibel mit den entsprechenden Anschluß
eines Atari TT ? Also eine C-32 für den Mega Bus mit ECL-Option als
VME Bus Karte.

Also ich kann schon die onboard VGA-Buchse von einer auf einer VME-Bus Karte unterscheiden  8)

Ich habe die Karte nun nochmal demontiert und diesmal ganz zerlegt. Hier war offenbar mal jemand sehr kreativ:

1. Das "Slotblech" ist mit "MOCO" (Monochrome Controller) betitelt
2. Auf der PCB selbst steht "MICO" (Mixed Controller)
3. Auf dem RAM-Daughterboard steht "C-32 1 MB"

Also was ist das nun für eine Karte?!

Am Anhang mal ein Foto der genannten Teile.
