While I was at school, fifteen years old, I had the honour to port, in a team of three, the Bundesliga Manager Professional, published by Software 2000 from Amiga to Atari ST. After leaving school, this led to my first larger contract: the development of a 3D space shooter game, again for Software 2000, on Atari Jaguar. However, the project was cancelled by Software 2000 in mid-1995. I had created a 3D graphics engine in assembler for the DSP56001 and 68000 and the Jaguar graphic chips, Jochen Hippel ported his Hippel song engine to the other DSP56001 dedicated for sound, and I presented this intermediate result to Bill Rehbock, Vice President of Atari at that date. He got excited and planned a Star Raider version for the Jaguar. Having received the draft contract, dreaming about a life in California – I was shocked by an e-mail from Bill stating he had been layed off and Atari stops all activities on Jaguar. Apparently, Software 2000 realised a bit earlier that the Jaguar would not be able to keep up with the then‑emerging Sony PlayStation. This was the end – of Atari, as we knew it, and also of my “career” as game developer.
